Birthdays

Fred Guardineer 1913, illustrator and comic book writer-artist best known for his work in the 1930s and 1940s. Guardineer broke into the fledgling field of comic books with DC Comics' landmark omnibus title Action Comics #1 (June 1938), writing, drawing, and lettering the 12-page feature introducing his magician-hero creation Zatara. Guardineer was also one of the artists on the existing features "Pep Morgan" (on which he sometimes used the pseudonym Gene Baxter) and, in Detective Comics, "Speed Saunders, Ace Investigator". There from 1949-1955, Guardineer drew writer Gardner Fox's Old West masked-crimefighter series The Durango Kid.

Harvey Kurtzman 1924, cartoonist and magazine editor, In 1952, he was the founding editor of the comic book Mad. Kurtzman was also known for the long-running Little Annie Fanny stories in Playboy (1962-88). During the 1950s, Kurtzman was one of the writers for the relaunched Flash Gordon daily comic strip, which had previously been one of the Mad targets, when his "Flesh Garden!" parody was illustrated by Wally Wood in 1954. Kurtzman was also the editor of Trump, published by Hugh Hefner in 1957. It presented Kurtzman's Mad sensibilities in a glossy, upscale magazine format. Trump only lasted for two issues. Kurtzman's last regular editorial position of note was at the helm of Warren Publishing's Help! from 1962 to 1966. In 1972, Kurtzman produced several animated shorts for Sesame Street.

Rob Liefeld 1967, comic book writer, illustrator, and publisher. Liefeld became prominent due to his work on Marvel Comics' The New Mutants and later X-Force. In 1992, he and several other popular Marvel illustrators left the company to found Image Comics, which started a wave of comic books owned by their creators rather than by publishers. The first book published by Image Comics was Rob Liefeld's Youngblood #1.

Ivan Brunetti 1967, cartoonist, Noted for combining blackly humorous taboo-laden subject matter with simplified and exaggerated cartoon drawing styles, Brunetti's best known comic work is collected in his largely autobiographical series Schizo, of which four issues have appeared between 1994 and 2006. Schizo #4 received the 2006 Ignatz Award for Outstanding Comic of the Year. He has also produced two collections of gag cartoons, Haw! (2001) and Hee! (2005). He has worked as an illustrator, including cover designs for The New Yorker magazine in 2007 and 2009. His early work includes also the strip "Misery Loves Comedy," which he created for the University of Chicago newspaper The Maroon while a student there.
