Well it's a great day for comic book artists. Not only is it Peter Alvarado's birthday but it's also Reed Crandall's. Reed was one of my favorite artists (of which I have a few) for his work on the Dollman series in the early 40's. His work was clean and full of life and to this day it's a pleasure to read the series. His work throughout his career was always precise and and consistent.
When it comes to the sci-fi genre there are quite a few actors and actresses who have put there heart and soul into their work. Geri Ryan (Seven of Nine) from Star Trek is on the list along with Drew Barrymore who has had a fine acting career beginning with E.T and onward. Kyle MacLachlan who first appeared in Dune in 1984, along with Allison Hayes who had a string of sci-fi movie appearances in the late 50's is also celebrating a birthday.
One other side bar is Gale Gordon, a fellow who came into fame with the Lucy show and then again in the mid 60's when he portrayed Mr. Wilson in the Dennis the Menace series. He appeared in one sci-fi comedy that was released in August 1959 called "The 30 Foot Bride of Candy Rock". He had the part of Raven Rossiter. The most interesting thing about this movie was that the part of Artie Pinsetter was played by Lou Costello. This was the only time that Lou had played in a movie without his long time comedy partner Bud Abbott. The movie was filmed from December 3 to 22, 1958 and as it turned out it was his last movie because Lou died 4 months later on March 3, 1959.
