A big happy birthday to comic book artist and Facebook friend Neil Vokes. During one of my many travels from Manitoba to Chicago I had the opportunity to meet Neil at the annual 1991 Chicagocon. I was lucky enough to have him do a Vampirella sketch for me which at the time was rumored to be his next endeavor, low and behold Neil didn't take on the new assignment but I feel privileged to have a sketch of what might have been. Thanks for the great work and memories Neil. Happy Birthday !!

| Neil Vokes 1954, comic book artist, Neil Vokes has been active in the comics field since the mid-1980s, drawing his first comic, 'The Key Eternal', at Comico in 1984. He has worked for several companies in various genres since. His work was published by the two major comic book publishers: Marvel ('Untold Stories of Spider-Man') and DC ('Superman Adventures'). He was also present at Dark Horse with 'Adventures of the Mask' and 'Jonny Demon'. Among his other credits are Malibu's 'Tarzan the Warrior', Crystal/Apple's 'Eagle' and Comico's 'Robotech Masters'. He has also drawn graphic novels like 'Parliament of Justice' and 'The Black Forest' at Image Comics. Currently working on Flesh and Blood #1. |

| Anthony Joseph (Tony) Strobl 1915, comic book artist and animator, attended Cleveland School of Art from 1933–37, with Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, who actually got some help from Strobl creating Superman. Gerard Jones in his book Men of Tomorrow reveals at one point Jerry Siegel contemplated ending his partnership with Joe Shuster in developing what became Superman and work with someone else instead. Strobl was among those approached but he respectfully declined, feeling his more cartoony artstyle was ill suited for such a serious character. After 1938 he worked as an animator on Fantasia, Dumbo, and Pinocchio. He started working for Western Publishing in 1947. At Western, he illustrated primarily Disney comics, especially from the Duck universe. Starting with a Bucky Bug story for Walt Disney's Comics and Stories #100 in 1949, Strobl had a long and impressive production of Disney comics. He did comic book stories for Western until 1968, and for the Disney Studio Program from 1963 to his retirement in 1987. Although during his career he primarily illustrated stories written by others, he wrote some of his stories himself. Strobl also illustrated some stories written by Carl Barks after the latter's 1966 retirement. The most significant of these is "King Scrooge the First" (Uncle Scrooge #71). In addition to Disney, Strobl illustrated comics with several other characters, such as Bugs Bunny and Woody Woodpecker. |
