Birthdays


Ryan Brown 1962, comic book artist best known for his work on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Brown began inking the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in 1985 and continued until 1988 when he and partner Steve Lavigne began producing artwork for licensed TMNT products. Brown worked primarily as inker over Lavigne's pencils.

Scott Brian Stantis 1959, cartoonist, Stantis was the comic strip creator of Sydney (1985-1986), The Buckets (1990-present), and Prickly City (2004-present). Stantis has also assisted Bob Thaves on his comic-strip King Baloo.
Doug Wildey 1922, cartoonist, most famous for his co-creation of the acclaimed animated television series, Jonny Quest (1964) for Hanna-Barbera Productions, and being a comic book artist. Wildey got his start in television animation working with Alex Toth at Cambria Studios on their 1962 series Space Angel. In addition to Jonny Quest, he also co-created the Herculoids and Jana of the Jungle television properties. His other television credits include work on Marvel Super Heroes (1966), Return to the Planet of the Apes (1975), The Godzilla Power Hour (1978), Mister T (1983), and Chuck Norris: Karate Kommandos (1986). He also worked on comic book series including Jonah Hex, Sgt. Rock and Tarzan (taking over the later book from Russ Manning). He created his own western comic book character, Rio. Most famously, he was able to return to his most prominent creation in the 1980s with a Jonny Quest comic series, published by Comico. He also created a comic strip, Ambler, that lasted about 12 to 18 months in the late '60s.
Howard Cruse 1944, alternative cartoonist known for the exploration of gay themes in his comics. Cruse's cartooning first attracted nation-wide attention in the 1970s, when he contributed to underground comix publications. His best-known character from this period was Barefootz, the title character of a surreal series about a good-natured, well-dressed young man with large bare feet. In 1979, when he began editing Gay Comix, a new anthology featuring comix by openly gay and lesbian cartoonists. For much of the 1980s, he created Wendel, a strip (1-2 pages per episode) about an irrepressible and idealistic gay man, his lover Ollie, and a cast of diverse urban characters. Cruse spent the first half of the 1990s creating Stuck Rubber Baby, a 210-page graphic novel commissioned by editor Mark Nevelow for his DC Comics imprint Piranha Press but eventually published by DC's Paradox Press. Cruse briefly wrote a column in a comic book review magazine, Comics Scene, under the rhyming masthead "Loose Cruse".

Events

1922, Bulletje en Boonestaak comic strip begins. The strip was one of the first very successful Dutch newspaper comics, the first Dutch comic moralists, and the first Dutch comic translated into other languages. It ran from May 2, 1922 until November 17, 1937 in the Dutch papers Het Volk and Voorwaarts, drawn by the Flemish artist George Van Raemdonck, who had moved to the Netherlands as a war refugee in 1914, and Dutch writer A.M. de Jong. The comic was controversial as the stories contained for instance nudity, fighting, vomiting and the use of bad words.
1967, Bridge scenes with Uhura, DeSalle, and Chekov are filmed for TOS: "Catspaw".
