Birthdays

Milt Gross 1895, comic strip and comic book writer, illustrator and animator. He wrote his comics in a Yiddish-inflected English. He originated the non-sequitur "Banana Oil!" as a phrase deflating pomposity and posing. His character Count Screwloose's admonition, "Iggy, keep an eye on me!", became a national catch phrase. Starting in 1931, he worked for the Hearst chain, doing various comic strips, including Count Screwlooose of Tooloose, Dave's Delicatessen, Babbling Brooks, Otto and Blotto and That's My Pop!
Jay E. Fife 1965, artist, Jay draws from a variety of influences including comics, horror and science fiction television and films. Jay has done covers for various small press comics and magazines. Recently art was featured in a 2 page spotlight and pin-up in Hustler Magazine.

Phil Davis 1906, cartoonist, illustrated Mandrake the Magician, written by Lee Falk. In 1933, Davis met St. Louis advertising agency executive Lee Falk, and the two began their collaboration on Mandrake the Magician. Falk asked Davis to do a dozen panels on spec. Davis did so, and in 1934 Falk went to New York and pitched the concept to King Features Syndicate. The strip was launched June 11, 1934 with Davis illustrating and Falk scripting. One of Davis' assistants was Ray Moore, who later became the first artist on Falk's other comic strip, The Phantom, also distributed by King Features.
