Birthdays

Steve Bissette 1955, comic book artist, best known for his multiple award-winning collaboration with writer Alan Moore and inker John Totleben on DC Comics' Saga of the Swamp Thing (1983-87). His early work appeared in the pages of Heavy Metal, Epic Illustrated, Bizarre Adventures.
Steve Ellis 1971, comic book artist, While acting as penciller and inker for Marvel and DC Comics’ famous properties like Lobo, Iron Man, and Green Lantern, Steve has spearheaded such new titles as Jezebelle and recently Crimson Dynamo. As a creator he has been critically successful with the original Science Fiction comic series TRANQUILITY and most recently with THE SILENCERS with writer/co-conspirator Fred Van Lente! Steve's work has enjoyed widespread success painting and illustrating in the publications of Marvel and DC Comics, Wizards of the Coast, Upper Deck and numerous other companies. His high-powered illustrations have also been seen on packages for Hotwheels’successful “Atomics” line. Recently Steve has been teaching Digital Illustration and Life Drawing at Syracuse University’s well-respected illustration program.

Colonel Edward Michael "Mike" Fincke 1967, astronaut, actor, Fincke is a NASA astronaut who made an appearance as Lieutenant M. Fincke in the last episode of Star Trek: Enterprise, "These Are the Voyages...". Fincke received credit as an Engineer in the end credits of the episode. Fincke and fellow astronaut Terry Virts visited the set of Star Trek: Enterprise during their vacation and were invited to appear in the final episode. While in space and orbiting Earth, he had the chance to speak with Scott Bakula via space to ground link and was later awarded with a "Starfleet Award" (actually a trophy-size replica of the Starfleet emblem, [1]) for his work on board the ISS.
Hank Ketcham 1920, cartoonist who created the Dennis the Menace comic strip, writing and drawing it from 1951 to 1994, when he retired from drawing the daily page and took up painting full time in his studio at his home. Ketcham started in the business as an animator for Walter Lantz and eventually Walt Disney, where he worked on films such as Fantasia, Bambi, and Pinocchio. During World War II, Ketcham worked as a photographic specialist with the US Navy Reserve. Also while in the Navy he drew a cartoon called "Half Hitch". In 1951 he started Dennis The Menace, based on his own 4-year-old son Dennis Ketcham. Ketcham was in his studio in October 1950, when his first wife, Alice Mahar, burst in studio and complained that their 4-year- old, Dennis, had wrecked his bedroom instead of napping. "Your son is a menace," she shouted. Within five months 16 newspapers began carrying the adventures of the impish but innocent "Dennis the Menace." By May 1953, 193 newspapers in the United States and 52 abroad were carrying the strip to 30 million readers.
