Birthdays

Eric Basaldua 1980, comic book artist, worked on Witchblade, Magdalena, Tomb Raider with Top Cow.
Jack Kirby 1917, comic book artist, In 1941, Kirby and writer Joe Simon created the highly successful superhero character Captain America for Timely Comics. He contributed to a number of publishers, including Archie Comics and DC Comics, but ultimately found himself at Timely's 1950s iteration, Atlas Comics, later to be known as Marvel Comics. In the 1960s, Kirby co-created many of Marvel Comics' major characters including the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, and the Hulk along with writer-editor Stan Lee. Despite the high sales and critical acclaim of the Lee-Kirby titles, Kirby felt treated unfairly, and left the company in 1970 for rival DC Comics. While working for DC, Kirby created his Fourth World saga, which spanned several comics titles. Kirby returned to Marvel briefly in the mid- to late 1970s, then ventured into television animation and independent comics.

Vonda Neel McIntyre 1948, sci-fi writer, McIntyre had won her first Nebula Award, for the novelette "Of Mist, and Grass and Sand"; this later became part of the novel Dreamsnake (1978), which won both the Hugo and Nebula Awards. The novelette and novel both concern a female healer in a desolate, primitivized venue. McIntyre's debut novel, The Exile Waiting, was published in 1975. She has also written a number of Star Trek and Star Wars novels, including Enterprise: The First Adventure and The Entropy Effect. She wrote the novelizations of the films Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. It was McIntyre who came up with Hikaru as the first name of the Star Trek character Mr. Sulu, which became canon after Peter David, author of the comic book adaptation, visited the set of Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country and convinced director Nicholas Meyer to insert the name into the film's script.
