Birthdays

Peter J. Alvarado, Jr. 1920, animation and comic book artist. Alvarado's animation career spanned almost 60 years. He was also a prolific contributor to Western Publishing's line of comic books.
Reed Crandall 1917, illustrator and penciller of comic books and magazines. He was best known for the Quality Comics character Blackhawk and for stories in the critically acclaimed EC Comics of the 1950s. His first work appears in comics from publisher Quality Comics, for which he drew stories starring such superheroes as the Ray (in Smash Comics, beginning in 1941 and initially under the playful pseudonym "E. Lectron") and Doll Man (first in Feature Comics in 1941, then in the character's own solo title). His earliest confirmed cover art is for Fiction House's Fight Comics #12 (April 1941)

Alec Preston Stevens 1965, illustrator, His comics work includes literary adaptations (Wilde, Lovecraft, Dinesen, Dostoevsky, Reymont, and Jan Neruda) for Fantagraphics Books, Heavy Metal Magazine, and Kitchen Sink Press. Stevens also wrote and illustrated two graphic novels, The Sinners and Hardcore, for the DC Comics imprint Piranha Press in 1988 and 1989. He had an original story serialized in Dark Horse Comics's Deadline: USA in 1991-1992, and from 1993-1999 he drew a string of short stories for DC's Paradox Press imprint. In 1993 he illustrated Neil Gaiman's "A Tale of Two Cities" in DC/Vertigo's Sandman #51, reprinted as the lead story in the World's End collection.
Doug Allen 1956, cartoonist, Best known for his long-running comic strip Steven, Allen has over the years collaborated with long-time friend Gary Leib on music, animation, fine art, and comics, including the two-man Fantagraphics anthology Idiotland. In addition to the weekly feature Steven, which ran in college and alternative newspapers from 1977–1994, Allen's comics, gag cartoons, and illustrations have appeared in The New Yorker, BLAB!, Zero Zero, Weirdo, Pictopia, and Duplex Planet Illustrated. In addition to Idiotland, Allen and Leib collaborated on a number of stories in the fund-raising anthology comic Legal Action Comics volume 1, published in 2001.
