David Low 1891, political cartoonist and caricaturist who lived and worked in the United Kingdom for many years. Low was a self-taught cartoonist. Born in New Zealand, he worked in his native country before migrating to Sydney, Australia in 1911, and ultimately to London (1919), where he made his career and earned fame for his Colonel Blimp depictions and his merciless satirising the personalities and policies of German dictator Adolf Hitler, Italian dictator Benito Mussolini, Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin, and other leaders of his times.

When it comes to comic book artists from my past Gil Kane was one of my favorites. His work on the Green Lantern was always a pleasure, and of all the comic strips Wilson McCoy's Phantom was one of my favorites to read. So it's a great day when both are celebrating birthdays.

Birthdays

Gil Kane 1926, comic book artist, his career spanned the 1940s to 1990s and every major comics company and character. Kane co-created the modern-day versions of the superheroes Green Lantern and the Atom for DC Comics, and co-created Iron Fist with Roy Thomas for Marvel Comics. He was involved in such major storylines as that of The Amazing Spider-Man #96–98 (May-July 1971). Kane additionally pioneered an early graphic novel prototype, His Name is...Savage, in 1968, and a seminal graphic novel, Blackmark, in 1971. During the 1970s and 1980s, Kane did character designs for various Hanna-Barbera[6] and Ruby-Spears animated TV series. In 1977, he created the newspaper comic strip Star Hawks with writer Ron Goulart. In the early 1980s, he shared regular art duties on Superman with Curt Swan, and also contributed to the 1988 Superman animated TV series.

Wilson McCoy 1902, cartoonist, was the second artist on the (still running) "The Phantom" comic strip. He started out as Ray Moore's assistant, but when Moore retired from the strip after a war-injury, McCoy took over the entire strip (1949).

Some great people are having birthdays today but especially I want to acknowledge that comic book artist and Facebook friend Arthur Adams is having a birthday today. He is always in high demand for work and commissions because his work is so intricate and beautiful to look at. Someday I'll be lucky enough to own a piece of his work. Someday!

Arthur Adams 1963, comic book artist and writer, Art began a long career when he penciled the critically-acclaimed Longshot limited series. Since that point he has worked on projects including a 1989 two-issue run on X-Factor, and a 1990 three-issue run on Fantastic Four along with many notable series, including various X-Men titles, The Authority, Gen¹³, as well as numerous annuals.. He also had a ten-issue run on Tom Strong's Terrific Tales (2002–2004). His great detailed work has led him to avoid the rigors of deadline based comic series. He is also known for Art Adams' Creature Features, a collection of previously published stories that paid tribute to various B-movie monsters, published by Dark Horse Comics. Some of the stories had been originally published in black and white, but they were colored for the collection. Along with writer Steve Moore, Adams is the co-creator of Jonni Future. Art is also a highly-regarded cover artist, and he has provided cover images for issues of Superman, Batman, Justice League of America and Vampirella, among other titles. Birthdays

Bud Fisher 1885, cartoonist, In late-1907, he introduced a comic strip character he called "Mr. A. Mutt" (the initial stood for Augustus) that became instantly popular with the paper's readers. In March 1908, Fisher added a second character he named "Jeff," a diminutive man, the opposite of the tall and skinny Mutt. The "Mutt and Jeff" comic strip gained such popularity that Fisher, who was able to claim copyright to the characters

Skottie Young 1978, comic book artist, Young has penciled several Marvel titles including New Warriors, Human Torch, Spider-Man Legend of the Spider Clan and New X-Men. He's done covers for Cable & Deadpool and Marvel Adventures Iron Man as well. Until recently, he was a regular on the Around Comics podcast and he's currently working on an adaptation of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz for Marvel Illustrated.
