Robert Crumb 1943, artist and illustrator , a founder of the underground comix movement and is regarded as its most prominent figure. Though one of the most celebrated of comic book artists, Crumb's entire career has unfolded outside the mainstream comic book publishing industry. One of his most recognized works is the "Keep on Truckin'" comic, which became a widely distributed fixture of pop culture in the 1970s. Others are the characters Devil Girl, Fritz the Cat, and Mr. Natural.

Jack Kirby 1917, comic book artist, In 1941, Kirby and writer Joe Simon created the highly successful superhero character Captain America for Timely Comics. He contributed to a number of publishers, including Archie Comics and DC Comics, but ultimately found himself at Timely's 1950s iteration, Atlas Comics, later to be known as Marvel Comics. In the 1960s, Kirby co-created many of Marvel Comics' major characters including the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, and the Hulk along with writer-editor Stan Lee. Despite the high sales and critical acclaim of the Lee-Kirby titles, Kirby felt treated unfairly, and left the company in 1970 for rival DC Comics. While working for DC, Kirby created his Fourth World saga, which spanned several comics titles. Don Perlin 1929, comic book artist and occasional writer best known for Marvel Comics' Werewolf by Night, The Defenders, and Ghost Rider. In the 1990s, he was a major figure at Valiant Comics, where he was both an artist and editor. In 1951, Perlin was a penciller on Will Eisner's The Spirit. In 1974 he began a long association with Marvel, where he was a full-time penciler until 1987. Perlin left the Marvel managing art direction position in 1991 to became a major part of Jim Shooter's Valiant Comics team. Besides penciling the popular series Solar, Man of the Atom and Bloodshot, Perlin also edited (among others) titles like Shadowman, Magnus Robot Fighter, and Solar.

Frank Kelly Freas 1922, called the "Dean of Science Fiction Artists," was a science fiction and fantasy artist with a career spanning more than 50 years. For Weird Tales (November 1950), Freas did his first fantasy magazine cover, illustrating H. Russell Wakefield's "The Third Shadow" with his painting "The Piper." With his illustrating career underway, he continued to devise unique and imaginative concepts for other fantasy and science fiction magazines of that period. In a field where airbrushing is common practice, paintings by Freas are notable for his use of bold brush strokes, and a study of his work reveals his experimentation with a wide variety of tools and techniques. Over the next five decades, he created covers for numerous books and magazines, notably Astounding Science Fiction both before and after its title change to Analog; Mad magazine (for whom he painted many early covers featuring the iconic character, Alfred E. Neuman) from 1958 to 1962 (he started at Mad in February 1957 and by July 1958 was the magazine's new cover artist; he painted most of its covers until October 1962); cover art for DAW, Signet, Ballantine Books, Avon, all 58 Laser Books (which are now collectors' items), and over 90 covers for Ace books alone. He was editor and artist for the first ten Starblaze books. He was a participant in one of the all-time great literary hoaxes, I, Libertine (Ballantine Books, 1956), along with Jean Shepherd, Ian Ballantine and Theodore Sturgeon, incorporating several hidden jokes and references into his cover painting for that book. That same year he drew cartoon illustrations for Bernard Shir-Cliff's The Wild Reader, also for Ballantine. Freas was commissioned to paint the Skylab I insignia design and posters promoting the space program (used by NASA and now hanging in the Smithsonian Institution); pinup girls on bombers while in the United States Army Air Forces; comic book covers; the covers of the GURPS worldbooks Lensman and Planet Krishna; and many others, such as more than 500 saints' portraits for the Franciscans executed simultaneously with his portraits of Alfred E. Michael William Kaluta 1947, comic book artist, His early work included a Flash Gordon story for Charlton Comics and an adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs's Venus novels for DC. He is known for his work on the series Starstruck and The Shadow. He co-created Eve, the horror host turned The Sandman supporting character. He was one of the four comic book artists/fine illustrator/painters who formed the artists' commune The Studio in a loft in Manhattan's Chelsea district from 1975 to 1979. Ian David Marsden 1967, cartoonist, designer and artist. Ian has sold cartoons and illustrations to various international publications including Mad Magazine, The New Yorker and many others and his artwork has been seen in advertising campaigns and even on Coca Cola cans.

Helena Carter 1923, actor, Dr. Pat Blake, MD - Invaders from Mars (1953).

John Tobias 1969, comic book artist, graphic designer and video game designer. Along with Ed Boon he is one of the creators of the groundbreaking Mortal Kombat fighting game series. Tobias was an artist for The Real Ghostbusters comic book series before joining Midway Games.

Shane White 1970, comic book artist, His earliest comic work appeared in small-press comics in the mid-80s. His first professional penciling gig was for Silverwolf Comics' (Greater Mercury Comics) Eradicators in 1990. Several years later he did work for DC/Paradox's Big Book of Urban Legends. Keron Grant 1976, comic book artist, who has worked mostly for Marvel Comics. His first published work was a pinup in the back of one of the final issues of Dale Keown's Pitt. His first steady comics work was drawing three issues of the unpublished Century comic from Rob Liefeld's Awesome Comics. His job drawing online comics for the Matrix series led to a short stint on Iron Man when Matrix comics inker Rob Stull brought Grant to the attention of Marvel editors.

Craig Binkley 1946, worked as property master in the art department of Star Trek: Enterprise. Together with Jim Martin he designed the studio model for the EM pistol seen in Enterprise. C. Binkley, a name on the dedication plaque of Enterprise NX-01, was named after him.

Birthdays

Bob Brown 1915, comic book artist with an extensive career from the early 1940s through the 1970s. With writers Edmond Hamilton and Gardner Fox, Brown created the DC Comics hero Space Ranger, drawing the character's complete run from his debut in the try-out comic Showcase #15 (Aug. 1958) through Mystery in Space #103 (July 1965). Brown also penciled the DC title Challengers of the Unknown (taking over from Jack Kirby) for over ten years, from 1959–1969; and he had notable runs on DC's Superboy and Marvel Comics' Daredevil. Brown's work also appeared in DC's Action Comics, The Brave and the Bold, Detective Comics, Doom Patrol, House of Mystery, House of Secrets, My Greatest Adventure, Tales of the Unexpected, Tomahawk and World's Finest Comics; the Marvel Comics titles The Avengers, Warlock, and The Rawhide Kid; and the French comic series Big Boy.

Chester Commodore 1914, cartoonist, worked for the Defender, doing layout and then when staff cartoonist Jay Jackson died in 1950, he took over the position. Not only did he draw political cartoons, he also drew the strips The Sparks and The Ravings of Prof. Doodle.

Richard Krisher 1938, actor, Motorcycle Cop / Policeman / Cop - Batman (3 episodes, 1967), MXR - Lost In Space (1 episode, "Two Weeks in Space", 1967). Before becoming an actor, Krisher was a self-taught prodigy who toured the country giving presentations of his skill typing 160 words per minute under the sponsorship of the Royal Typewriter Co.

Marie Severin 1929, comic book artist and colorist best known for her work for Marvel Comics and the 1950s' EC Comics. Marie Severin's earliest recorded comic-book work is coloring EC Comics' A Moon, a Girl...Romance #9 (Oct. 1949). She would contribute across the company's line, including its war comics and its celebrated but notoriously graphic horror comics, for which she sometimes gave especially gruesome panels a single color in order to tone down otherwise graphic scenes of gore. She drew stories of the Sub-Mariner and the Hulk, and the covers or interiors of titles including The Amazing Spider-Man, Iron Man, Conan the Barbarian, Kull the Conqueror, The Cat, and Daredevil. Additionally, she worked on Marvel's satiric humor magazine Crazy, as well as the company's self-lampooning comic book, Not Brand Echh.

George Roussos 1915, comic book artist best known as one of Jack Kirby's Silver Age inkers, including on landmark early issues of Marvel Comics' Fantastic Four. He entered comics in 1939 as letterer of the Spanish-language version of the newspaper panel Ripley's Believe It or Not. The following year, Bob Kane and Bill Finger hired him to assist inker Jerry Robinson on Batman stories. Roussos' duties included drawing backgrounds, inking, and lettering, starting as early as Batman #2 (Summer 1940). He and Robinson would eventually leave the Kane studio to work directly for National (DC Comics) on Batman and other characters. Gene Roddenberry 1921. screenwriter, producer, futurist. Best known for creating the science fiction series Star Trek. As a freelance writer, Roddenberry wrote scripts for Highway Patrol, Have Gun, Will Travel and other series, before creating and producing his own television program, The Lieutenant. In 1964, Roddenberry created Star Trek, and it premiered in 1966, running for three seasons before cancellation. Syndication of Star Trek led to increasing popularity, and Roddenberry continued to create, produce, and consult on Star Trek films and the television series, Star Trek: The Next Generation until his death. Years after his death, Roddenberry was one of the first people to have his ashes "buried" in space.

Birthdays

Hal Foster 1892, Canadian-American cartoonist most famous as the creator of the comic strip Prince Valiant. Foster worked as a staff artist for the Hudson's Bay Company in Winnipeg and moved to Chicago in 1919 where he studied at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts and soon found illustration assignments. Foster's Tarzan comic strip, adapted from Edgar Rice Burroughs' novels, began January 7, 1929, continuing until Rex Maxon took over the Tarzan daily on June 10, 1929. Foster returned to do the Tarzan Sunday strip beginning September 27, 1931, continuing until Burne Hogarth took over the Sunday Tarzan on May 9, 1937. He soon grew tired of adaptation and began planning his own creation. William Randolph Hearst, who had long wanted Foster to do a comic for his newspapers, was so impressed with Foster's pitch for Prince Valiant that he promised Foster the ownership of the strip if he would start the series, a very rare offer in those days. The strip began February 13, 1937, continuing for decades. In 1967, Woody Gelman, under his Nostalgia Press imprint revived some of his earlier work. In 1970, Foster was suffering from arthritis and began planning his retirement. He had several artists draw Sunday pages before choosing John Cullen Murphy as his collaborator and permanent replacement in 1971. Murphy drew the strip from Foster scripts and pencil sketches. Foster stopped illustrating (and signing) the Prince Valiant pages in 1975. For several years, he continued writing the strip and doing fairly detailed layouts for Murphy, eventually doing less and less of both the writing and art until Alzheimer's took his memory and he no longer remembered ever doing the strip at all. His Prince Valiant pages were much admired by other artists, and he became a key influence on several generations of artists who were creating realistic comic strip and comic book illustrations, including Joe Kubert, George Pratt, Mark Schultz, William Stout, Warren Tufts, the British illustrator Bill Ward, Al Williamson and Wally Wood.

When Shelley and Marilyn Monroe were roommates in the late 1940s in Hollywood, Shelley said that one day she had to step out and asked Marilyn to "wash the lettuce" for a salad they were to share for dinner. When she got back to the apartment, Marilyn (aparently new to the art of cooking) had the leaves of lettuce in a small tub of soapy water and was scrubbing them clean. She was also a fan of the TV show "Babylon 5" (1994).
