One event I recommend for you to Google is Genesis II. Genesis II was the first of three attempts by Roddenberry to create a new sci-fi series following the success of Star Trek. Although Roddenberry had scripts lined up for a 20-episode first season, CBS declined to pick it up, opting instead for the short-lived Planet of the Apes live-action series. For all of you that have seen the 2000 Andromeda series that was produced by Majel Roddenberry the you'll recognize the main character Dylan Hunt. Some of the ideas were used from Genesis II such as the melodramatic opening line, "My name is Dylan Hunt. My story begins on the day on which I died." I suggest if you can find the movie then sit and enjoy.

Al Williamson 1931, cartoonist and comic book artist, At the age of 21, he began working for EC Comics, the publishers of MAD Magazine. For the Star Trek fans it's a day to celebrate John de Lancie ( Q ). His work goes well beyond his role as Q and I recommend taking a peek at his other roles.


Also today two actors appeared in the 50's TV series, Adventures of Superman. One of the coolest things I always liked in the series was Superman's flying scenes. While considered simple by today's standards, the flying effects on Adventures of Superman were advanced for the period. A little info about his take offs was that cables and wires were used for Superman’s take-offs early in filming, but when Reeves came close to suffering a concussion in the episode "Ghost Wolf", cables and wires were discarded and a springboard was brought in. Reeves would run into frame, hit the out-of-frame springboard which would boost him out of frame (sometimes over the camera), and onto padding. With the proper camera movement it almost seemed like he was flying out of the scene.

Well I want to start this off with a big Happy Birthday to comic book artist and Facebook Friend Bill Reinhold. Back when both I and Bill were much younger I bothered him at his table at the 1990 Chicago Con and convinced him that a Badger and Mavis sketch would be a great thing (for me of course). Needless to say he was nice enough to do it. The work was large and intricate and must have taken him more time than what I paid for it. It sits proud amongst my collection of works and serves both as art and a memory of the event. Of late, I was glad to have run into Bill at SDCC in 2009, it was great to have met him again after 19 years. Happy Birthday Bill !!

Birthdays

Bill Reinhold 1955, artist and inker, Reinhold has been drawing and inking comic books professionally since 1981. He's done work most notably for First Comics, Marvel Comics,[1] and DC Comics. Reinhold is known mostly for drawing characters such as The Badger, Punisher, Batman, and Silver Surfer. As a comic book inker he's worked with other artists on Marvel Comics books such as Daredevil, the Earth-X trilogy, The Hulk, and The Amazing Spider-Man. At DC Comics he has done inking on such comic series as Challengers of The Unknown, The Book Of Fate, Batman, Green Arrow, and Brave And The Bold.

Sam Grainger 1924, comic book artist best known as a Marvel Comics inker during the 1960s and 1970s periods. Series on which he worked include The Avengers, The Incredible Hulk and X-Men.

Frank McLaughlin 1935, comic book artist who co-created the character Judomaster ; a comic strip illustrator who served as a successor artist on such strips as Nancy and Brenda Starr ; and an author of books about cartooning and comic art. In early 1972, McLaughlin left Charlton to freelance for both DC and Marvel Comics. His first work for the former was The Flash #215 (May 1972), co-inking (with Dick Giordano) penciler Irv Novick. Settling into his career as an inker, McLaughlin did a few stories for that series as well as a handful of backup features, then became a regular at Marvel, inking the likes of Wayne Boring on Captain Marvel and Sal Buscema on Captain America and The Defenders before becoming primarily a DC inker. Throughout the 1970s, McLaughlin inked backup stories featuring the Atom, Black Lightning, Zatanna, and "The Fabulous World of Krypton", among others, and became the regular series inker for penciler Dick Dillin's Justice League of America, and for some issues of penciler Ernie Chan's Batman stories in Detective Comics, and Joe Staton's Green Lantern. Eugene (Gene) Byrnes 1889, cartoonist, created the long running comic strip Reg'lar Fellers, which he signed Gene Byrnes. His humorous look at suburban children (who nevertheless spoke like New York street kids) was distributed by various syndicates from 1917 to 1949.

It was Sowards' draft of Wrath of Khan which convinced actor Leonard Nimoy to resume his role of Spock. Sowards persuaded Nimoy to sign on by having Spock die in the script.

Stephen Edward Poe 1936, author, In 1968, under the name Stephen E. Whitfield, he published The Making of Star Trek, a book he wrote with Gene Roddenberry. For many years, this was the only book on the production of Star Trek. Thirty years later, he published his second Star Trek book, A Vision of the Future - Star Trek: Voyager.
