Buck Rogers, Spawn, Iron man 2, War of the Worlds, Serenity, Batman, Babylon 5, Gorath, Meteor, The Addams Family, John Astin, Dick Tracy, Aliens.

It's a 2 Buck day today. By that I mean that it is not only the first day, in 1930, that the Buck Rogers Sunday strip began, but coincidentally in 1979 the Buck Rogers in the 25th Century pilot was released for distribution for theatres. It was the good box-office returns which led NBC to commission a full series, which started in September 1979. As some of us remember it starred Gil Gerard as Buck Rogers, and co-starred Erin Gray as Colonel Wilma Deering. As I've mentioned before in the blog, the character of Buck Rogers was originally Anthony Rogers but got changed when it became a comic strip on January 7, 1929.

I would also like to mention that Erin Gray is one of our many guests we have coming to the Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo on the 24 & 25th of April, 2010. With other guests including Leonard Nimoy, Brent Spiner, Billy Dee Williams, and Malcolm McDowell, it will be a great time.

As always take a look at the others in the list, there is alot of great talent and memories from the past. Enjoy !!

Patrick Troughton, Doctor Who, Space:1999, Sir Elton John, Dreadstar, The She-Creature, Angel Medina, Moonbase, Joe Palooka.

For all that are Doctor Who fans then you'll be happy to see that Patrick Troughton's birthday is here. Patrick played the second incarnation of the Doctor from 1966 to 1969. What I didn't realize was that he made an appearance at the end of the second season of Space: 1999 as the character Archon. The episode was entitled The Dorcons and to summarize the Dorcans demand that Moonbase Alpha hand over Maya so that the use of her brain stem can continue their immortal existence. Pretty cool episode for me when I was just a teenager.

Also, reverting back to memory lane, The Muppet Show had so much talent appearing on it, including birthday boy, Sir Elton John (who is classified as a Knight Bachelor). My wife and I saw him in concert last year and were so impressed with his presence on stage.

Finally, I want to say a big Happy Birthday to comic book artist and new Facebook friend, Angel Medina. I first encountered his work in Dreadstar and have loved it ever since. Happy Birthday Angel !!

As always take a look at all the rest of the great people and events for today, there's a favorite for everyone.

Joseph Barbera, Ub Iwerks, Big Bang Theory, Hellboy Junior, Drawn and Quarterly, The Blob, Captain Video, Space 1999, Surface, King Kong, Dr. U'bx.

Two of the greatest animators were born today. Joseph Barbera and Ub Iwerks took their talent and brought us the beginnings of what we know as the animation today.

If you're a fan of Big Bang Theory then you'll be happy to know it's Jim Parson's birthday (Sheldon Cooper). A little trivia is that the Barenaked Ladies sing the theme. For all that like the theme here's the words:

Our whole universe was in a hot dense state,Then nearly fourteen billion years ago expansion started--Wait! The Earth began to cool, The autotrophs began to drool, Neanderthals developed tools, We built a wall (we built the pyramids), Math, science, history, Unraveling the mystery, That all started with the Big Bang! BANG!

Birthdays

William York Wray 1956, cartoonist and landscape painter, notable for his Urban Landscape series of paintings, his many pages for Mad and his contributions to The Ren & Stimpy Show. He has used the name Bill Wray for his cartoon creations and William Wray for his work as a fine artist. Wray spent much of his childhood traveling about as an Army brat, reading comic books and watching animated cartoons. At the age of 15, Bill received training in Newport Beach, California, from a retired Disney animator. He then entered the animation industry, working for a variety of studios, including Disney, Hanna-Barbera and Filmation. In 1985, he moved to New York, doing comic book work for Marvel and DC Comics, while studying at New York's Art Students League. A phone call from John Kricfalusi sent him back West in the early 1990s to work on The Ren & Stimpy Show, Samurai Jack and other shows. His long-run "Monroe" series appeared in more than 100 issues of Mad, and he has also co-created Dark Horse Comics Hellboy Junior with Mike Mignola based on the Hellboy character.

Many of the stories from those comics were collected in When I'm Old and Other Stories, published by Alternative Comics in 2003. In 2003, Bell began the self-published semi-autobiographical Lucky series, of which the third won a 2003 Ignatz Award for Most Outstanding Minicomic. In 1967, Hanna-Barbera was sold to Taft Broadcasting for $12 million, but Hanna and Barbera remained head of the company until 1991. When Disney decided to form an animation company, Ub Iwerks was the first employee he had due to his skill at fast drawing as well as being a personal friend. He served as the principle animator for the first Mickey Mouse shorts and Silly Symphonies. Iwerks was so prominent in the production of these shorts that it was speculated that Ub was the dominate force behind the success of Disney Productions. The combination of Iwerks' rising ambitions, occasional differences with Walt and a tempting deal with Pat Powers to finance his own studio prompted him to break away in 1930. His studio was closed in 1936 when Powers withdrew his support. He worked for Columbia starting in 1938 and worked for two years until he decided to return to Disney. The two men never commented on their renewed relationship but the reunion was mutually beneficial. Iwerks was able to abandon animation and concentrate on technical development which helped create many of the special effects that the Disney company excelled in for decades, especially concerning the live action animation combination sequences in Song of the South (1946) and Mary Poppins (1964). He was known as the fastest animator in the business in early sound period. He animated Mickey's first short, Plane Crazy (1928) by himself in only two weeks (700 animation drawings a day!). The DC Comics supervillian Dr. U'bx was named in his honor.
