Russ Heath 1926, artist best known for his comic book work — particularly his DC Comics war stories for several decades and his 1960s art for Playboy magazine's Little Annie Fanny featurettes. Heath drew a corral-full of Western stories for such Timely comics as Wild Western, All Western Winners, Arizona Kid, Black Rider, Western Outlaws, and Reno Browne, Hollywood's Greatest Cowgirl. He drew the December 1950 premiere of the two-issue superhero series Marvel Boy, as well as scattered science fiction anthology stories (in Venus, Journey Into Unknown Worlds, and Men's Adventures); crime drama (Justice); horror stories and covers (Adventures into Terror, Marvel Tales, Menace, Mystic, Spellbound, Strange Tales, Uncanny Tales, the cover of Journey into Mystery #1), satiric humor (Wild, Mad), and war stories. Heath produced combat stories both for the wide line of Timely war titles and the first issue (Aug. 1951) of EC Comics' celebrated Frontline Combat. Heath later did the first of many decades' worth of war work for DC Comics, with Our Army at War #23 and Star Spangled War Stories #22, both cover-dated June 1954.

James "Jim" Shooter 1951, writer, occasional fill-in artist, editor, and publisher for various comic books. He is most notable for his successful and controversial run as Marvel Comics' ninth editor-in-chief, and his work as editor in chief of the short-lived but influential company Valiant Comics. At the age of 14, Shooter began selling stories to DC Comics. Writing for both Action Comics and Adventure Comics, beginning with Adventure Comics #346 (July 1966), Shooter provided not only writing but pencil breakdowns as well. Shooter created several characters for the Legion of Super-Heroes including Karate Kid, Ferro Lad, and Princess Projectra. He also created the Superman villain The Parasite. In the mid-70s,Shooter joined the Marvel staff as an assistant editor and writer, being most remembered for the Korvac Saga in Avengers. In 1978 he succeeded Archie Goodwin to become Marvel's ninth editor-in-chief. In July 2009 Dark Horse Comics announced at the Comic-Con International in San Diego that Shooter will oversee the publication of new series based on classic Gold Key characters like Turok, Doctor Solar, and Magnus, Robot Fighter, and write some of them as well.

Charles Burns 1955, cartoonist, Charles Burns' earliest works include illustrations for the Sub Pop fanzine, and Another Room Magazine of Oakland, CA, but he came to prominence when his comics were published for the first time in early issues of RAW, the avant-garde comics magazine founded in 1980 by Françoise Mouly and Art Spiegelman. In 1982, Burns did a die-cut cover for RAW #4. Raw Books also published two books of Burns as 'RAW One-Shot': Big Baby and Hard-Boiled Defective Stories. From 1993 to 2004, he serialized the 12 chapters of his Harvey Award-winning graphic novel Black Hole (12 issues from Kitchen Sink Press and Fantagraphics Books). In October 2005, he released a slightly remastered collection of Black Hole.

Sophia Violet Crumb 1981, cartoonist, Comics Sophie drew as a child appeared in Weirdo magazine, and she collaborated with her parents on Dirty Laundry Comics. She has also produced two issues of a series titled Belly Button Comix, which is published by Dutch publisher Oog & Blik together with Fantagraphics Books. Her most recent work is Sophie Crumb: Evolution of a Crazy Artist, published by W.W. Norton in 2010. She is the daughter of underground comix artists Robert Crumb and Aline Kominsky-Crumb.

Don Rico 1912, comic book writer and artist for Marvel Comics' predecessors, Timely and Atlas, and a paperback novelist. His pen names include Dan Rico, Donella St. Michaels, Donna Richards, Joseph Milton, and N. Korok. He began his comics career in 1940 at Victor A. Fox's Fox Publications and later worked on some of the earliest stories of the 1940s superhero Daredevil (unrelated to Marvel Comics' Daredevil) in Lev Gleason Publications' Silver Streak Comics, helping lay the foundation for a character that would go on to a celebrated run in his own title under Charles Biro. Rico variously wrote/drew for characters including Captain America (including the lead story in All Select Comics #1), the Whizzer (including in All Winners Comics #11), the Destroyer, the Blonde Phantom, the Terror (in Mystic Comics), Venus, and the Young Allies.

Louise Simonson 1946, comic book artist, She is best known for her work on comic book titles such as Power Pack, X-Factor, New Mutants, Superman: The Man of Steel, and Steel. She is often referred to by the nickname "Weezie". Louise met the comic book writer and artist Walt Simonson in 1973 and the couple started dating in August 1974. They were married in 1980.

Birthdays

Bob Layton 1953, comic book artist, writer, and editor, who has worked for Marvel Comics, Valiant Comics, DC Comics, Future Comics. Layton and Stern began publishing a fanzine called CPL (Contemporary Pictorial Literature) out of Layton's apartment. CPL rapidly became a popular fan publication, and led to the two forming an alliance with Charlton Comics to produce and publish "the now-famous Charlton Bullseye magazine". Layton becoming acquainted with the legendary Wally Wood, with whom he apprenticed. This apprenticeship led to work for Charlton (on anthology titles, but not working from the Charlton offices), Marvel and DC, while still publishing fanzines. He worked for Marvel "for about a year, then signed an exclusive one-year contract with DC in Spring/Summer 1977, taking up regular inking duties on All Star Comics, as well as inking multiple issues of Secret Society of Super-Villains, DC Super Stars and DC Special, among others.] In Nov/Dec 1977, he inked the first issue of David Michelinie's Star Hunters, and after a number of other shorter inking jobs, moved back to Marvel in late 1978, to ultimately take up one of his best remembered roles. Layton reunited with Star Hunters writer David Michelinie, to co-write a re-imagined Iron Man. The two began with November, 1978's issue #116 of Iron Man, taking over the writing from Bill Mantlo. The two would create some of the best loved Iron Man/Tony Stark stories staying with the title until #154 (Michelinie wrote a couple more issues without Layton), and then returning for a second lengthy run from February 1987's issue #215 to #250 (Dec 1989). Layton was one of the chief architects of the Valiant Universe. He co-created a number of the core characters including X-O Manowar, and later became Editor-in-Chief and Senior Vice President. His first Valiant work appeared in Magnus, Robot Fighter #1 (May, 1991), in which he inked Art Nichols' artwork from Jim Shooter's script. He would continue with Magnus for five issues (and produce covers to issue #9), while also inking the inaugural issues of Solar, Man of the Atom, which he also edited. In 2000 he co-founded Future Comics.

Paul Pope 1970, alternative comic book artist. Pope introduced THB in 1995, the same year he began work for Kodansha, Japan's best-known manga publisher. Pope has self-published some of his work through is own Horse Press, with other work such as One-Trick Ripoff coming from Dark Horse Comics and Heavy Liquid and 100% published under DC Comics' Vertigo imprint.

Ham Fisher 1900, comic strip writer and cartoonist, best known for his popular, long-run Joe Palooka, which ranked as one of the top five newspaper comics strips during the 1940s.

Bill Vallely 1952, illustrator, writer, He has written and drawn for many comic books including for Marvel Comics, DC Comics, Valiant Comics, Omni Comix, Archie Comics, Harvey Comics, Hanna Barbera, and Nintendo Comics System. He has illustrated children's books for Laredo Press, and worked on several animated children's television programs including Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers, The Smurfs, Bad Dog, and Tricksters. He was also responsible for co-writing the script of the episode "Tinker, Tenor, Doctor, Spy" of Star Trek: Voyager.

Carson Van Osten 1946, comic book artist, Van Osten became a writer and artist of Disney comics. From 1969 to 1976, he created Mickey Mouse and Goofy comics for the publisher Disney Studio, which produced comics for the European market. Starting in 1976, he was art director for Disney's comic strips department in the 1980s. After that, it seems that he has sporadically worked on new Disney comics, including some covers and the adaptation of the Atlantis: The Lost Empire film.

Richard W. Dorgan 1892, cartoonist, He is remembered as the illustrator of Thorne Smith's first two novels, Biltmore Oswald (1918) and Out o' Luck (1919), as well as for his work as a columnist for Photoplay Magazine and newspaper artist in the 1920s and '30s. Dorgan produced "Not Now," a comic strip for the Adams Newspaper Service. From circa 1930–1932, Dorgan produced the daily panel "Colonel Gilfeather.

David Mazzucchelli 1960, comic book artist and illustrator, His early work was in superhero comics for Marvel Comics and DC Comics, although he later embarked on a series of acclaimed alternative comics projects. He started at Marvel Comics where, after a few various issues, he became the regular artist on Daredevil. Mazzucchelli collaborated again on the four-issue story Batman: Year One, serialized in issues 404 through 407 of DC Comics' monthly Batman title.

As much as I love the work of Joe Kubert, I am more in awe of William Stout. Mr Stout was nice enough to come to the 2010 Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo. Unfortunately because of the large amounts of running around I did to help keep things organized I didn't get a chance to really talk to him. My hope is he can make a return in the near future to the Expo.

Joe Kubert 1926, comic book artist who went on to found the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art. He is best known for his work on the DC Comics characters Sgt. Rock and Hawkman.

Shad Petosky 1974, comics author, designer, and television animator. He, Zander Cannon and Kevin Cannon formed the comic art studio Big Time Attic in the fall of 2004. They illustrated the graphic novel Bone Sharps, Cowboys, and Thunder Lizards for science writer Jim Ottaviani. They are currently working on a genetics graphic novel with writer Mark Schultz for Farrar, Straus and Giroux, and Top 10.

William Stout 1949, fantasy artist and illustrator, Stout began his professional career as an illustrator for comic books and graphic novels, with his first job coming in 1968 with the cover for the first issue of the pulp magazine Coven 13. In 1971 he worked as Russ Manning's assistant on Manning's Tarzan of the Apes Sunday and daily newspaper comic strips. In 1972, Stout worked for Harvey Kurtzman and Will Elder on Playboy's "Little Annie Fanny". In 1973 Stout began his relationship with the Firesign Theatre, where he gained international notoriety for his numerous bootleg record album covers. From 1976 to 1977 Stout worked as art director for the rock magazine Bomp! During this time, he became one of the first American contributors to Heavy Metal magazine. In 1977 Stout painted his first movie poster, for Ralph Bakshi's film Wizards. During his career, Stout has worked on the advertising for over 120 films. In 1978, with Buck Rogers, Stout began his film production design career. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Stout and fellow illustrator Richard Hescox ran a Los Angeles art studio, working on such projects as the storyboards for Raiders of the Lost Ark and pop singer Michael Jackson's "Thriller" video. Fellow cartoonist Dave Stevens worked for a time in the same studio. Stout has worked on over thirty feature films, including both Conan films, First Blood, The Hitcher, and Invaders From Mars. In 1985, with Return of the Living Dead, Stout became the youngest production designer in film history. He also production designed the Masters of the Universe film. Stout wrote The Warrior and the Sorceress for Roger Corman, and a never-produced dinosaur feature for Jim Henson. For Industrial Light & Magic in 1996, he designed "Edgar" (the big bug in Men in Black). Stout was the key character designer for the computer-animated feature Dinosaur (released in 2000). Stout worked as the conceptual designer for The Muppets' Wizard of Oz, and key designer for Guillermo del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth. Recent film work includes Christopher Nolan's film The Prestige and creature design for Frank Darabont's & Stephen King's The Mist. He is slated to work on del Toro's At the Mountains of Madness as well as a proposed John Carter of Mars film. In 1981 Bantam Books published Stout's landmark masterwork The Dinosaurs: A Fantastic New View of a Lost Era (recently updated and re-published as The New Dinosaurs). In 1983, Stout was among those who illustrated Ray Bradbury's Dinosaur Tales. In 1984 he illustrated The Little Blue Brontosaurus, which was a 1984 Children's Choice Award recipient and the basis for the 1988 animated feature The Land Before Time. In 1986, as a result of his paleontological reconstruction work, eleven Stout paintings were selected for inclusion in the traveling exhibition "Dinosaurs Past and Present," an important group show depicting the history of paleoart. Author Michael Crichton acknowledged Stout's work as an inspiration for his 1990 book Jurassic Park. In 1993, Universal Cartoon Studios chose Stout to design a prime-time animated series of Jurassic Park.
