Keith Giffen 1952, comic book illustrator and writer. best-known for his long runs illustrating, and later writing the Legion of Super-Heroes title in the 1980s and 1990s. He also created the alien mercenary character Lobo (with Roger Slifer), and the irreverent "want-to-be" hero, Ambush Bug.He has worked on titles (owned by several different companies) including Woodgod, All Star Comics, Doctor Fate, Drax the Destroyer, Heckler, Nick Fury's Howling Commandos, Reign of the Zodiac, Suicide Squad, Trencher. For Valiant Comics, Giffen wrote XO-Manowar, Magnus, Robot Fighter, Punx and the final issue of Solar, Man of the Atom.
John Francis Rosenberger 1918, comic book artist and painter, he worked primarily in the romance and superhero genres of comics, with forays into many other subjects.

In 1941, he wrote several weeks of continuity for the Spirit daily newspaper strip. he met Dik Browne, and assisted him on Browne's comic strip Hi and Lois.

Vincent Fago 1914, comic-book artist and writer who served as interim editor of Timely Comics, the Golden Age predecessor of Marvel Comics, while editor Stan Lee did his World War II service. after Lee's return, Fago left to work in independent comic-book production and as a children's-book illustrator for Golden Press.
Jerry Ordway 1957, writer, penciller, inker and painter of comic books. He is best known for his inking work on a wide variety of DC Comics titles, including the continuity-redefining classic Crisis on Infinite Earths (1985-1986), his long run working on the Superman titles from 1986-1993, and for writing and painting the Captain Marvel original graphic novel The Power of Shazam! (1994), and writing the on-going monthly series from 1995-1999. In 2001, he drew the one-shot Just Imagine. He inked the last year (May 2002 - May 2003) of the Batman family title Azrael: Agent of the Bat (#88 - #100), and also provided the artwork for a six-issue story arc in Wonder Woman (vol. 2, issues #189-194), with writer Walt Simonson in 2003. Recent work includes pencilling three issues of The Brave and the Bold (volume 2) (#11-13, May-July 2008) with writer Mark Waid, and pencils for Justice Society of America Annual #1 (Sept. 2008), alongside some interior artwork for the on-going Justice Society of America series during late 2008.

Pat Broderick 1953, comic book artist known for his work on the Micronauts. Broderick also pencilled the four-part Batman: Year Three storyline, written by Marv Wolfman, which detailed the first meeting of Batman and Tim Drake.
Lou Fine 1914, Fine's first published comics art was the strip "Wilton of the West" in Fiction House's Jumbo Comics #4 (Dec. 1938), Fine went on to do exquisite and acclaimed work for Fox Feature Syndicate, where he supplied the cover of 1939's Blue Beetle #1 and drew such features as "The Flame" in Wonderworld Comics and the later eponymous series. For publisher Everett M. "Busy" Arnold's Quality Comics, he drew features including "The Black Condor" (initially under the pseudonym Kenneth Lewis) in Crack Comics; "Doll Man" (under the pseudonym William Erwin Maxwell) in Feature Comics; "The Ray" (initially under the jokey pseudonym E. Lectron) in Smash Comics; "Uncle Sam" (for which Eisner & Iger co-founder Will Eisner received credit) in National Comics; and "Stormy Foster" in Hit Comics. Fine became particularly prominent as a cover artist.
Louis Turenne 1933, actor, known for his work on the Babylon 5 television series. Turenne played the Minbari Draal in the first season two-part episode "A Voice in the Wilderness". The producers later cast him in the recurring role of Brother Theo, the leader of a group of Roman Catholic monks who came to live on the station. Charles Monroe Schulz 1922, cartoonist best known worldwide for his Peanuts comic strip. Schulz's first regular cartoons, Li'l Folks, were published from 1947 to 1950 by the St. Paul Pioneer Press; he first used the name Charlie Brown for a character there, although he applied the name in four gags to three different boys and one buried in sand. The series also had a dog that looked much like Snoopy. In 1948, Schulz sold a cartoon to the Saturday Evening Post; the first of seventeen single-panel cartoons by Schulz that would be published there. Later that year, Schulz approached the United Feature Syndicate with his best strips from Li'l Folks, and Peanuts made its first appearance on October 2, 1950. The strip became one of the most popular comic strips of all time. He also had a short-lived sports-oriented comic strip called It's Only a Game (1957–1959), but abandoned it due to the demands of the successful Peanuts. From 1956 to 1965 he also contributed a single-panel strip ("Young Pillars") featuring teenagers to Youth.

Noel Neill is having a birthday today. She has the notoriety of having been a part of the Superman franchise for 59 years first playing the part of Lois Lane in 1947 and subsequently moving on to playing Lois's mother and ending her reign in 2006's Superman Returns movie. Such a long career deserves a second look.

Paul Murry 1911, cartoonist and comics artist. He is best known for his Disney comics, which appeared in Dell Comics and Gold Key Comics from 1946 to 1984. In the 1940s, Murry worked on Disney newspaper strips, including the Sunday Uncle Remus and His Tales of Brer Rabbit strip from the first installment on October 14, 1945 through July 14, 1946. He is best known for his rendition of Mickey Mouse and associated characters. This includes serials starring Mickey and Goofy in Walt Disney's Comics and Stories and Mickey Mouse Magazine. Murry also drew such characters as Donald Duck, Uncle Scrooge, Brer Rabbit, The Sleuth, and others. The Phantom Blot and Super Goof comic books contained many Murry stories.
Pierre Camille Lucien Hilaire Jean Bellocq 1926, cartoonist, At age 19, the French racing journal France Courses gave him national exposure when they published one of his cartoons of a jockey. Bellocq signed the drawing as "Peb", a signature which would become his lifelong moniker. Within a few years Peb was widely known and an emerging artist who also gained recognition for his caricatures on sports advertising posters. Pierre Bellocq has produced several books; his first consisted of 150 cartoons and was titled Peb's Equine Comedy. It was published by Random House in 1957 and is still in print.

He was the sixth President of Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, taking office in 1972.

He was the editor and principal writer of the American magazine Famous Monsters of Filmland, as well as an actor and producer (Vampirella). Ackerman was central to the formation, organization, and spread of science fiction fandom, and a key figure in the wider cultural perception of science fiction as a literary, art and film genre. Famous for his word play and neologisms, he coined the genre nickname "sci-fi". In 1953, he was voted "#1 Fan Personality" by the members of the World Science Fiction Society, a unique Hugo Award never granted to anyone else.

I don't know which thing to mention first so I'm flipping a coin.

K, so today is the day you find out a little bit more about the fellow who did the voice of George Jetson. Not sure who he was then look a little lower.

And today in 1963 the first episode of Doctor Who was aired. Most think of Doctor Who as a British idea but to tell the truth it was a Canadian who was working for the BBC who created the character along with the idea of a box that was bigger on the inside then on the outside. Thank you Sydney Newman for making television better.

Carl Gafford 1953, colorist (and occasional editor) who has worked for several decades in the comics industry. His career to date has spanned several publishers, including Marvel Comics, DC Comics and Topps Comics. Gafford began coloring The Legion of Super-Heroes with #288, and continued on that run for 7 years without missing an issue, totaling 125 regular issues, giants, mini-series and two different Legion books a month for a year.
Nelson Slade Bond 1908, science fiction writer, Bond was a pioneer in early science fiction and fantasy. His published fiction is mainly short stories, most of which appeared in pulp magazines in the 1930s and 1940s. Many were published in Blue Book magazine. He is noted for his "Lancelot Biggs" series of stories and for his "Meg the Priestess" tales, which introduced one of the first powerful female characters in science fiction.
Christopher Rule 1895, comic book artist active from the 1940s through at least 1960, and best-known as the first regular Marvel Comics inker for legendary comics artist Jack Kirby. Rule's earliest confirmed story work is penciling the seven-page "With Tears in My Soul" in My Own Romance #6 (June 1949). Rule continued to ink romance stories over such pencilers as Klein, Sekowsky, and Shores in such comics as Faithful, Love Classics, and Love Tales. He expanded into other forms with the mythologically-based superheroine Venus, inking Werner Roth on a story in Venus #10 (July 1950), and with horror via the story "Hands of Murder", penciled by Sekowsky, in Adventures Into Terror #4 (June 1951) from Marvel's 1950s iteration, Atlas Comics.
George O'Hanlon 1912, actor, Television viewers recognize him as the voice of George Jetson in Hanna-Barbera's 1962 prime-time animated television series The Jetsons and its 1985 revival. He also wrote stories for television series in the 1960s such as Petticoat Junction, 77 Sunset Strip and even wrote episodes for HB's The Flintstones. It is interesting to note that he also auditioned for the role of Fred Flintstone but lost to Alan Reed, however he was remembered when it was time to cast The Jetsons. Karl Stevens 1978, graphic novelist, His first book, Guilty, was published in 2004 with a grant from the Xeric Foundation. He is also the author of Whatever (2008) and The Lodger (2010). His comic strips have appeared since 2005 in the alternative newsweekly the Boston Phoenix.
Greg Allen Theakston 1953, comic book artist, has worked for numerous publishers. In addition to his many contributions to books and magazines, he is known for developing the Theakstonizing process used in comics restoration. He has used the pseudonym Earl P. Wooten. In 1972 he began illustrating for men's magazines, including Gent, Dude and Nugget. As he built his portfolio, Theakston expanded to paperbacks and magazines, including Berkley Books, Dell, Ace, DAW, Zebra, Tor, St. Martin's Press, Warner, Ballantine Books, Belmont-Tower, If and Galaxy Science Fiction. Among other various assignments were jobs for Marvel Comics, DC Comics, Image Comics, Warren Comics, New York Daily News, Archie Comics, as well as periodicals magazines including National Lampoon, The New York Times, Kitchen Sink, Playboy, TV Guide and Rolling Stone. He was a Mad illustrator for ten years and has worked regularly with numerous comics publishers on projects such as Omega Men, Super Powers, DC Comics Presents, DC's Who's Who and Planet of the Apes. He contributed to Detroit's Fantasy Fans and Comic-collector's Group on their fanzine The Fan Informer (1968–71), as well as his own publication, The Aardvark Annual (1968). Theakston was also involved in the Detroit Triple Fan Fair, a multimedia convention from 1970 to 1978, eventually owning it after working on a dozen shows. An original member of The Crusty Bunkers, Theakston worked closely with Neal Adams at Continuity Associates between 1972 and 1979, producing animatics, storyboards, comic art and various commercial advertising assignments. Theakston's movie poster work includes Invaders From Mars, Silk Stockings, B'Wani Junction, The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, The Jungle Book and Mogambo. Larry Welz 1948, comic book artist, creator of Cherry Poptart (now known simply as Cherry). He is a noteworthy early contributor to the underground comics movement based in the San Francisco area in the late 1960s and early 1970s. In 1969 his work was published in Yellow Dog, a tabloid comic paper put out by the Print Mint in Berkeley, California. A partial list of additional comic books from the era featuring his work includes San Francisco Comic Book, Captain Guts, Funnybook, Bakersfield Kountry Komics, and American Flyer Funnies. Evolving out of early prototype stories in Funnybook and Bakersfield Kountry Komics, Welz created Cherry in the early 1980s. Cherry quickly became his most successful and well-known comic book character and series, with 22 issues to date and a variety of collections, posters, stickers, and even tattoos following.

Mike Sekowsky 1923, comic book artist best known as the exclusive penciler for DC Comics' Justice League of America during most of the 1960s, and as the regular writer and artist on Wonder Woman during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Sekowsky began working in the comics in 1941, as an artist at Timely Comics. On this day in 1985 Calvin and Hobbes began it's 10 year run. At the time no one knew that Bill Watterson had made the decision fairly early that the clock was ticking on the comic strip. It was sad to see it go in 1995.

Faith Burrows 1904, a nationally syndicated cartoonist during the Jazz Age. In the late 1920s and early 1930s, Burrows drew a daily comic panel called Flapper Filosofy (sometimes spelled Flapper Filosophy) for King Features Syndicate. Each panel exhibited a flapper wearing one of the current fashions, with a witticism typed at the bottom. Burrows's panel ran in competition for a time with Ethel Hays's simliarly-themed Flapper Fanny Says panel from NEA. She also drew a daily panel called Ritzy Rosalie c. 1930, also for King Features.

In 1977, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, was released. As a younger person the movie freaked me out and made me look towards the sky in the evenings. Being from a small hamlet with a backyard that looked out into the dark horizon made the sky watching even more eerie.

Martin Nodell 1915, cartoonist and commercial artist, best known as the creator of the Golden Age superhero Green Lantern. Some of his work appeared under the pen name "Mart Dellon". Nodell began his illustrating career in 1938, working first as a freelancer. In 1940 he provided some work for Sheldon Mayer, an editor at All-American Publications. It was a subway ride in Manhattan that inspired Green Lantern. En route to his Brooklyn home in 1940, Nodell noticed a trainman waving a lantern along the darkened tracks. He coupled the imagery with a magic ring — akin to Wagner's 'Ring Cycle', which also inspired The Lord of the Rings — and the hero was born". Nodell left All-American in 1947 and joined Timely Comics where he drew postwar stories of Captain America, the Human Torch and the Sub-Mariner. In 1950, Nodell left comics to work in advertising, joining the Leo Burnett Agency as an art director. In 1965, his design team there developed the long-running flour-company mascot the Pillsbury Doughboy.
Eric Wight 1974, artist, animator, illustrator, Wight is the author of the manga, My Dead Girlfriend. He illustrated the comic book adaptation of Michael Chabon's Pulitzer Prize winning novel The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay. He was the recipient of the 2004 Russ Manning Award. He is perhaps best known as the 'ghost artist' for television character, Seth Cohen on the former Fox TV series The OC and is the creator of 'Atomic County'. For the HBO TV show Six Feet Under he created the fake vintage comic "Blue Twister". Wight was also an animator, working with Warner Bros. during the heyday of their animated output, working on such cartoons as Superman: The Animated Series, Batman Beyond, and others.
